FIA GT1 World Championship

The FIA GT1 championship or the FIA Grand Tourer 1 championship is a car-racing event. SRO group is responsible for organizing the event and the event is regulated by the FIA. It features multiple races on sports cars manufactured for road use. At the end of the season the drivers and the team with the highest number of points win the championship. The FIA GT1 world championship was started in 2010 as the successor of FIA GT championship.

FIA GT1 Championship Format

The championship format is based on the illustrious F1 championship run by the FIA and spans across twelve countries. The races are mainly held on street circuits such as the Durban Street Circuit. However closed circuit races are commonplace as well with races held at Nurburgring and Silverstone.

FIA GT1 Championship Participation Guidelines

A maximum of six private manufacturers are allowed to participate. Each manufacturer can supply to a maximum of two teams. Each team has two drivers in each car and a maximum of two cars per race. There are twelve participating teams meaning that a total of twenty four cars and forty eight drivers participate at each event. As in F1 championship each team has to take a mandatory pit stop during the final race day at each of the events.

FIA GT1 Championship Point System

Points are awarded to the top ten finishers of the final event and the top three finishers of the qualifying races the day before.

The current leader in the drivers’ points standing is Michael Bartels of Germany with 83 points. On the same number of points but in second place due to winning at less number of races is Andrea Bertolini of Italy followed by his compatriot Thomas Mutsch of Germany with 77 points and Romain Grosjean of Switzerland with 62 points. Vitaphone Racing team leads the manufacturers’ championship with 111 points they are followed by Matech Competition of Switzerland and Sumo Power GT of Great Britain with 77 and 70 points respectively.
